The Moorespeed BMW R100GS
The concept was to produce the ‘ultimate’ version of this classic air-cooled twin, based as closely as reasonably possible upon the Paris-Dakar racers of the late 1980s – but with more power and practicality.
Virtually all the items listed can be supplied enabling enthusiasts to build their own ‘ideal’ version.
Front forks
- Paioli/Kayaba 46mm upside-down front forks with 300mm travel and adjustable for both damping and preload
- Brembo two-piston caliper and 320mm dia. wavy brake disc
- Talon hub laced to Excel rim with stainless steel spokes/nipples
Chassis
- Comprehensively braced main frame with laser-cut steel plates welded in place
- Custom oil cooler mounted below steering head
- Rear sub frame is substantially shorter and slimmer than stock with additional bracing and incorporates rear carrier
- Monolever swingarm replaces paralever, and (together with the drive shaft) is lengthened
- Wilbers shock absorber with variable damping
- Shock absorber’s bottom mount moved from rear hub to swing arm to give longer suspension travel
- Centre stand modified to suit
Engine
- Total engine rebuild, including all external surfaces bead blasted to as-new appearance
- • Wide choice of tuning options include: Moorespeed/Omega developed high compression pistons, longer con-rods, balancing, gas-flowed cylinder heads, oversized valves, high-lift camshaft, modified Bing or Dell’Orto carburettors
- Free-breathing air filter system
- Engine develops 90bhp @ 6,700rpm (crankshaft – standard is 60bhp @ 6,500rpm)
- Engine develops 104Nm torque @5,000rpm (standard is 74Nm @ 3,500rpm)
Transmission
- Moorespeed heavy duty clutch
- Total gearbox rebuild
- Higher ratio 5th gear fitted (+10%)
- Lower ratio 1st gear fitted (-6%)
Rear hub/wheel
- Bevel box fitted with crown and pinion to suit 3-stud G/S80 hub with choice of ratios
- Hub laced to 18-inch Excel rim with stainless steel spokes/nipples and offset 15mm to allow fitment of 140mm section rear tyre. 18-inch diameter wheel means greater tyre choice too
- Rear brake operating lever has reversed action for extra ground clearance
Exhaust
- Moorespeed built stainless steel exhaust headers with 2-into-1 stainless steel collector and re-packable stainless steel muffler (no longer available)
Fittings
- Saddle slimmed, shortened, additional foam added to give flat top surface and recovered with leather/suede
- Battery box replaced by stainless steel item carrying lighter, smaller, absorbed glass mat (non-spill) battery
- Fuel tank sprayed/airbrushed
- Pivot-peg pivoting stainless steel footrests
- Renthal handlebars sitting on Moorespeed 75mm high risers
- HPN front fairing and screen
- Digital instruments with analogue style rev counter
- 7-inch headlight with Phillips HiD lighting
- UFO plastics
- All fasteners (wherever practical) stainless steel
- All framework/swing arm etc powder coated
- Where practical BMW components utilised i.e. electrics, indicators, switchgear
